星巴克召回25万只中国造咖啡杯

咖啡连锁店星巴克(Starbucks)以危及儿童安全为由，对中国制造的产品发布了主动召回通知，成为最新一个采取此类措施的美国企业。

继美国玩具制造商美泰(Mattel)和孩之宝(Hasbro)之后，这家总部位于西雅图的咖啡企业宣布召回25万只2006年5月至今年8月期间销售的儿童塑料杯。这些杯子上有模具浇制的塑料动物脸谱和杯盖，动物脸谱类型包括瓢虫、海龟、兔子和小鸡。

据发布产品召回通知的美国消费品安全委员会(USCPSC)称，杯子上的塑料脸谱有时会脱落，露出尖锐的塑料边缘，并且出现了至少两起脱落碎片哽塞儿童的案例。

星巴克会为这些杯子退钱，并为退还杯子的顾客提供一杯免费咖啡。在2006年10月，该公司召回了7.3万个中国制造的咖啡机，原因是线路问题导致一些产品的塑料外壳被熔化。

星巴克的一位发言人将这次召回称为个案，并表示，该公司不打算改变自己现有的产品采购方式。

美国消费品安全委员会还宣布，召回美国童子军(Boy Scouts of America)销售的160万个金属徽章，原因是徽章的油漆含铅超标。

类似的问题在今年曾导致数以百万计的中国造玩具被召回。本月早些时候，8家美国企业宣布召回含铅超标的产品。玩具反斗城(Toys R Us)、迪士尼(Disney)产品制造商Kids II Inc和其它6家公司召回了包括书签、水壶及玩具手电筒在内的中国制造产品。

与此同时，全国零售商PetSmar公司昨日下调本季度收益预期，原因是该公司宣布召回因中国产原料而受污染的宠物食品，导致今年夏季的销售额下滑。

STARBUCKS RECALLS CHINESE MUGS

Starbucks, the coffee shop chain, has become the latest US company to issue a voluntary recall of Chinese- made products because of child safety concerns.

Following in the steps of Mattel and Hasbro, the largest US toymakers, the Seattle-based coffee company is recalling a quarter of a million plastic children's mugs sold at its stores between May 2006 and August this year. The mugs have moulded plastic animal faces representing a ladybird, a turtle, a bunny and a chick, and have with a plastic top.

According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, which publicises product recalls, the plastic faces of the mugs have in some cases broken off, exposing sharp plastic edges, and in at least two cases have led to children starting to choke on the fragments.

The retailer is offering to refund the cost of the cups and is offering customers who return them a free coffee. In October 2006, the company recalled 73,000 Chinese-made coffee makers because faulty wiring caused some to melt their plastic shells.

A Starbucks spokesman described the recall as an isolated incident and said the company had no plans to change its current product sourcing practices.

The USSPSC also announced the recall of 1.6m metal badges sold by the Boy Scouts of America, because of unacceptably high levels of lead in the paint.

Similar problems have led to the recall of millions of Chinese-made toys so far this year. Earlier this month, eight US companies recalled products tainted with lead. Toys R Us, Walt Disney products maker Kids II Inc and six other companies recalled Chinese-made items, from bookmarks to water bottles and toy flashlights.

Meanwhile, PetSmart, a national retailer, yesterday lowered its earnings guidance for the quarter against the background of a drop in summer sales caused by a recall of pet food contaminated by a Chinese-made ingredient.
